Matchweek Preview: May 8-11's Biggest Matches Across Europe
This might be the most consequential weekend of the entire European season.
Barcelona can win the La Liga title at Camp Nou, against Real Madrid. In an El Clasico.
If that happens, Arbeloa's players have to stand on the pitch and watch their fiercest rivals lift a trophy in front of 100,000 people.
There is no crueller way to end a season.
In England, Arsenal go to the London Stadium knowing three more wins seals their first league title in 22 years.
City host Brentford needing to keep pace after that 3-3 nightmare at Everton.
Liverpool can clinch Champions League football with a win over Chelsea, a Chelsea side that hasn't won a league game since March 4.
And at the bottom, West Ham are in the relegation zone and face Arsenal.
Spurs host Leeds on Monday night and need a result to survive. Something has to give.
By Monday night, we'll know a lot more about who's celebrating and who's clearing out their desks.
Premier League
Liverpool vs Chelsea (Saturday, May 9, 12:30pm)
Two broken teams meeting at the worst possible time. Liverpool have lost 19 games this season, twelve months after winning the title.
Chelsea haven't won a league game since March 4 and have scored once in six games. Slot needs this win to secure a Champions League spot.
McFarlane needs it to salvage something from the rubble of Chelsea's season.
Liverpool could have Alisson back after missing eight games, and Isak returned to training this week, though he's likely only fit for the bench.
Salah is still out and may have played his last game for the club.
Chelsea are without Sanchez (concussion protocol), Estevao (season over), Derry (head clash), and Mudryk (suspended).
Neto and Garnacho are doubts after knocks against Forest. Gittens could return to the matchday squad.
Chelsea at Anfield with no fit wingers and a goalkeeper crisis.
Liverpool with a point to prove after the United humiliation.
This should be straightforward but with these two, nothing is straightforward this season.

Tip: Liverpool win to nil — Chelsea have scored once in six league games. Once.
Brighton vs Wolves (Saturday, May 9, 3pm)
Brighton are 6th on 52 points, two behind Bournemouth in the race for European spots.
Wolves are already relegated and have nothing to play for.
This should be a Brighton stroll, but they've been inconsistent at home, four draws in their last six at the Amex.
Prediction: Brighton 3-0 Wolves
Tip: Brighton win and over 2.5 goals — Wolves have conceded two or more in their last seven away games.
Fulham vs Bournemouth (Saturday, May 9, 3pm)
Bournemouth are quietly having the season of their lives, 7th on 52 points after beating Palace 3-0 last week. Fulham are 10th and comfortable.
This is a fixture that Bournemouth would normally draw (they've drawn 16 this season), but with European football at stake, Iraola's side might just find the extra gear.
Prediction: Fulham 1-1 Bournemouth
Tip: Draw — because it's Bournemouth. Seventeen draws incoming.
Sunderland vs Man United (Saturday, May 9, 3pm)
United have already secured Champions League football and Carrick might rotate with one eye on the final few games. Sunderland are mid-table and safe.
The danger for United is complacency.
Sunderland at the Stadium of Light are no pushovers, and a young squad with nothing to lose can be dangerous.
Prediction: Sunderland 1-2 Man United
Tip: Both teams to score — United's defence switches off when the pressure's off.
Man City vs Brentford (Saturday, May 9, 5:30pm)
City cannot drop points.
Arsenal could be on 79 by the time this kicks off if the Gunners beat West Ham on Sunday. City are on 71 with a game in hand (Crystal Palace on Wednesday), but Pep knows another slip and the title is gone.
Haaland has 25 league goals. Brentford are mid-table but dangerous — Igor Thiago has 22 goals this season and will fancy himself against City's defence.
After the 3-3 at Everton, City need to come out and be ruthless.
Brentford will sit in and try to hit them on the counter.
If City start slowly again, the Emirates will be bouncing before Arsenal even play.
Prediction: Man City 3-1 Brentford
Tip: Man City win and over 2.5 goals — they'll score, but Thiago will test them.
Burnley vs Aston Villa (Sunday, May 10, 2pm)
Burnley are already relegated.
Villa are 5th on 58 points and chasing a Champions League spot, but they've got the Europa League semi-final second leg against Forest on Thursday. Emery will rotate. He has to.
Even a weakened Villa side should be too much for Burnley at Turf Moor, but this is the kind of game where a slip-up can happen.
Prediction: Burnley 1-2 Aston Villa
Tip: Both teams to score — Villa's rotated defence will leak one.
Crystal Palace vs Everton (Sunday, May 10, 2pm)
Palace are 13th and finished for the season. Everton are 11th under Moyes and comfortable after that heroic 3-3 with City on Monday.
Neither side has anything meaningful to play for, but Everton will be riding high after going toe-to-toe with City and getting a point.
Prediction: Crystal Palace 1-1 Everton
Tip: Under 2.5 goals — two mid-table sides with nothing at stake.
Nottingham Forest vs Newcastle (Sunday, May 10, 3pm)
Forest are 16th on 42 points but riding a wave of momentum, unbeaten in six in the league, 5-0 over Sunderland, 3-1 at Chelsea, and leading Aston Villa 1-0 in a Europa League semi-final.
Newcastle are 14th and have been a massive disappointment. Forest at the City Ground, full of confidence, should have enough here.
Prediction: Nottingham Forest 2-1 Newcastle
Tip: Forest win — they're playing with the swagger of a team that smells a European final.
West Ham vs Arsenal (Sunday, May 10, 4:30pm)
Arsenal are on 76 points and need three wins from their final three to guarantee the title regardless of what City do.
West Ham are 18th on 36 points, in the relegation zone after that 3-0 battering at Brentford.
Nuno has a fully fit squad, but a fully fit West Ham is still a relegation-quality side.
Arsenal have won their last two trips here with an aggregate score of 11-3. Eleven goals. Three conceded. At the London Stadium.
Arteta might rest a couple of players with the Champions League final against PSG on May 30 in the back of his mind, but the title comes first. Timber is still out (11 games missed now) and Merino is weeks away from returning.
Lewis-Skelly is a doubt after picking up a knock against Atletico. But Saka, Gyokeres, Rice, Odegaard — the big guns will all start.
West Ham need a miracle. They're not getting one.
Prediction: West Ham 0-3 Arsenal
Tip: Arsenal -1.5 handicap — the Gunners have scored 11 in their last two visits here.
BANKER OF THE WEEKEND: Arsenal to beat West Ham. The Gunners are chasing the title, West Ham are in freefall, and the last two trips to the London Stadium produced 11 Arsenal goals. This is as close to a certainty as football gets.
Spurs vs Leeds (Monday, May 11, 8pm)
Spurs are 17th on 37 points. Leeds are 15th on 42.
This is a relegation six-pointer dressed up as a Monday night fixture. Spurs won at Villa Park last week, their first away win in months, and another three points here would put significant daylight between them and the drop zone.
Leeds are safe but could still be dragged into trouble with a defeat.
Three managers, 37 points from 35 games, and still fighting for survival.
That's Tottenham Hotspur in 2026. If they can't beat Leeds at home, start printing the Championship season tickets.
Prediction: Spurs 2-1 Leeds
Tip: Spurs win — desperation does strange things to football teams.
La Liga
Barcelona vs Real Madrid (Sunday, May 10, 9pm)
This is the game of the entire European season. Not because it's competitive.
Barca are 11 points clear and a win or draw clinches the title. But because of what it represents.
Barcelona can win La Liga on their own pitch, in front of 100,000 people, against their fiercest rivals. At Camp Nou.
In an El Clasico. The first Clasico at Camp Nou in over three years after the renovations.
Flick's Barca have lost one game all season, one in 34. They've scored 89 goals. They've won 10 in a row.
Lamine Yamal is out for the season, which is the only cloud, but Raphinha, Pedri, Gavi, and Lewandowski are more than enough.
Barca beat Real 2-3 in the Supercopa final in January, the result that got Xabi Alonso sacked and brought Arbeloa in from Castilla.
Real Madrid have had a miserable season, knocked out of the Champions League, no Copa del Rey, and 11 points behind in the league.
Arbeloa is under pressure and there are already reports linking Didier Deschamps to the job after the World Cup.
Courtois should return, but several key players remain injured.
This is a team playing for pride and nothing else.

Serie A
Inter have already won the Scudetto, their 21st title, confirmed with three games to spare after beating Parma 2-0.
The race below them, though, is still alive.
AC Milan vs Atalanta (Sunday, May 10)
Milan are 5th on 67 points after losing 2-0 at Sassuolo last week, a shocking result.
Atalanta are 7th on 62 and still chasing European football.
Milan at the San Siro should be strong enough, but after that Sassuolo embarrassment, nothing is guaranteed. La Dea will come to play.
Prediction: AC Milan 2-1 Atalanta
Tip: Both teams to score — Atalanta always create chances away from home.
Napoli vs Lazio (Sunday, May 10)
Napoli are second on 70 points and have nothing left to play for in the title race, Inter are gone at 84.
Lazio are 6th on 63 and fighting for a Champions League spot.
This is a game that matters far more to Lazio than Napoli, and that imbalance could produce an upset.
Prediction: Napoli 1-1 Lazio
Tip: Draw — Napoli's intensity drops when the title is settled.
Roma vs Torino (Sunday, May 10)
Roma are on 64 points and within touching distance of the top four after that 4-0 demolition of Fiorentina. Torino are 15th and safe.
Roma at home with Champions League football still possible should be too much quality.
Prediction: Roma 2-0 Torino
Tip: Roma win to nil — Torino have scored more than once away from home just three times since January.
Bundesliga
Bayern have already won the league but missed out on the Champions League final after PSG knocked them out 6-5 on aggregate in one of the wildest semi-finals in history.
Dembele scored inside three minutes in Munich and Kane's stoppage-time equaliser came too late. The treble dream is dead.
Dortmund vs Bayern Munich (Saturday, May 9)
BVB are second on 67 points, Bayern are champions on 82.
This is a pride game for Dortmund and a potential hangover game for Bayern after the PSG heartbreak. Kompany will rotate.
Dortmund should fancy this at home.
Prediction: Dortmund 2-1 Bayern
Tip: Dortmund win — Bayern's heads will be down after PSG knocked them out on Wednesday.
UPSET SPECIAL: Dortmund to beat Bayern Munich.
Everyone assumes Bayern roll through the Bundesliga on autopilot, but they just lost a Champions League semi-final in agonising fashion.
Kompany will rotate, the players will be mentally drained, and Dortmund at home are a completely different animal. Take BVB at big odds.
RB Leipzig vs Wolfsburg (Saturday, May 9)
Leipzig are 3rd on 62 points and chasing a guaranteed Champions League spot.
Wolfsburg are mid-table and have nothing to play for.
Leipzig at home should handle this comfortably.
Prediction: Leipzig 3-0 Wolfsburg
Tip: Leipzig win to nil — Wolfsburg have scored once in their last four away games.
