Spain are world champions, and Argentina spent the final whistle trying to make sure nobody could talk about anything else.

So the Spain vs Argentina World Cup final ended 1-0 after extra time, and it ended with a red card shown after the game was already over. 

Ferran Torres, on as a substitute, scored in the 106th minute. 

That was the football. What followed was not football at all, and it will be what this final is remembered for.

Because Spain did not just win. They suffocated. 

Argentina reached full time without a single shot, not one, in a World Cup final. 

Emiliano Martinez made eleven saves, breaking the record for a final that had stood at eight, and he still finished on the losing side. 

That is what happens when a goalkeeper plays the game of his life and nobody in front of him turns up.

Argentina went 90 minutes of a World Cup final without a single shot. 

Then they found plenty of energy the moment the whistle went.

Ferran Torres Off The Bench

De la Fuente took Oyarzabal off in the 62nd minute and sent on Torres. 

Forty-four minutes later, Torres struck from close range and won Spain the World Cup. 

He becomes only the second substitute in history to score the winner in a World Cup final, after Mario Gotze in 2014. 

Not bad for a man who had not scored all tournament.

Still, the moment that shaped it came three minutes into stoppage time. 

Enzo Fernandez, already booked, ran through an off-balance Pau Cubarsi and left Slavko Vincic no choice. 

Second yellow, red, gone. 

So Argentina played the entire thirty minutes of extra time a man down, and Spain, patient all night, finally found the gap.

The numbers are brutal reading for a defending champion. 

Spain finish with seven clean sheets, a record for a single World Cup, and one goal conceded across eight matches, the fewest by any champion in history. 

De la Fuente, at 65, becomes the oldest coach to win the thing. 

This was not a smash-and-grab. This was a stranglehold.

The Ugliest Ending We Have Seen

And then it all came apart.

As Spain's substitutes ran on to celebrate, Nahuel Molina appeared to swing at Rodri as the Spain captain ran past. 

Rodri stopped, turned, and the flashpoint was lit. 

Leandro Paredes, who had already been booked for shoving Rodri in the back after half-time, then shoved Eric Garcia by the throat and put him on the floor. 

Moments later he wrestled Gavi to the ground, pushed into his face while holding him by his substitute's bib, and appeared to lash out with his feet.

Vincic showed Paredes a red card after the final whistle. 

Alan Shearer called it throwing haymakers into someone's face. 

Gary Neville called Paredes a disgrace. 

Neither was exaggerating.

Separately, footage circulating from the stands appeared to show Argentina assistant coach Roberto Ayala confronting and striking Dani Olmo during the melee. 

That incident went unpunished on the night, and FIFA are now expected to review the scenes. 

Of course, an investigation is not a verdict, but it should not need saying that a member of a coaching staff has no business anywhere near a player in that situation.

Then, during the trophy presentation, Argentina's players stood with their backs turned to the Spanish celebrations. 

Look, losing a World Cup final hurts. 

But there is a way to lose, and this was not it.

Messi Deserved A Better Farewell

Lost in all of it: this was almost certainly Lionel Messi's last act in an Argentina shirt.

He was poor. 

Let us be honest about that, because pretending otherwise insults him. 

Spain crowded him, cut his supply, and the man who had dragged Argentina out of three graves in this tournament could not find a fourth escape. 

He stayed out of the trouble entirely, and he was in tears during Spain's celebrations.

That is the cruellest part. 

The greatest player most of us will ever watch ends his World Cup career on a night his teammates turned into a brawl. 

He deserved a better ending than the one his own dressing room wrote for him.

Spain are worthy champions and it is not close. 

Seven clean sheets. One goal conceded in eight games. 

A midfield nobody solved and a teenager in Lamine Yamal who never stopped running at people. 

They won this tournament the boring way, which is another way of saying the proper way.

For the record, we called Spain to lift it and tipped the goals to stay low. That one landed. 

But nobody had the champions of the world finishing a final with two red cards and a FIFA investigation.

Because that is Argentina's real legacy from this final. 

Not the defeat, losing to this Spain side is no shame. 

It is what happened after, and the fact that a generation's greatest player had to watch it from the middle of it, crying.
