Real Madrid has announced the departure of their head coach, Xabi Alonso, after the 3-2 loss to Barcelona in the Super Cup on Sunday.

The former Bayer Leverkusen coach joined the club in the summer after his sensational run with the German club, which saw him go an entire season unbeaten in the Bundesliga, but he hasn't been able to replicate the form at Real Madrid.

Former club defender Alvaro Arbeloa is the caretaker manager until a substantive manager is announced.
