Tottenham Hotspur were within touching distance of winning the UEFA Super Cup in Thomas Frank’s first competitive game in charge, but they managed to lose it at the end.

PSG lined up a tweaked side with Gigi Donnarumma the obvious omission, with new signing Lucas Chevalier standing in goal, with the Italian completely missing from the matchdaysquad. Fabian Ruiz was left on the bench as a midfield of Vitinha, Joao Neves and Zaire-Emery started the game.

Tottenham started with a couple of new signings too; Joao Palhinha was thrown into the deep with Yves Bissouma out due to disciplinary issues, while Mohammed Kudus got the nod upfront in a weird 5-3-2 formation which transformed into a 3-5-2 in patches.

PSG had a good start, but Tottenham soon usurped spaces and troubled the European champions. It was clear after the first quarter of an hour that the Parisians were steps backwards after only returning to training last week from their extended holiday.

Spurs took the lead after Van De Ven tapped in from a loose ball in the PSG area, and from there, it felt like goodnight for Luis Henrique’s team. Tottenham caused problems from set pieces, which is a notable hallmark of Thomas Frank’s side.

New club captain Christian Romero headed home early in the second half, but you’d feel Chevalier should have done better. Luis Henrique rang some changes, but it all felt like Spurs was running away with this one.

Lee Kang-In rifled home in the 86th minute to halve the deficit; the goal rattled Spurs, who were already tired and in game management mode. Four minutes into added time, another substitute, Goncalo Ramos, beat the offside trap to level matters, much to the disappointment of the Spurs fans.

Micky Van De Ven and Mthijs Tel both missed from the spot to hand the advantage to Nuno Mendes, who made no mistake as PSG won the 2025 UEFA Super Cup 4-3 on penalties, having trailed the game up until the 85th minute.

"For 80 minutes we didn't deserve that. I think Tottenham deserved to win the match because they were in form, they were training for six weeks, and they played a great match," Luis Enrique told TNT Sports.

"We have been training only for six days, but sometimes football is unfair. I have to say we were very lucky in the last 10 minutes that we could score two goals."

"My players had faith until the last minute, like our supporters," Luis Enrique said.
