The Carabao Cup has proven to be tough ground for Arsenal, and once again, the Gunners have failed to advance to the quarterfinals with an emphatic loss at West Ham.

Ben White headed past his own goalkeeper midway into the first half off a corner kick, and Arsenal never looked like getting into the game from thereon. With the Newcastle trip next in line, Mikel Arteta’s rotation failed, and the team must find ways to rise above the embarrassment at the London Stadium.

Mohammed Kudus and Jarrod Bowen completed the scoring before substitute Martin Odegaard scored a consolation goal for the Gunners. West Ham will face their quarterfinal opponent in a draw on Thursday.

Elsewhere on the night, the season went from bad to worse for Manchester United. Once again, in front of the Old Trafford crowd, the Red Devils slumped to a 3-0 defeat in the hands of Newcastle, the team they beat to the title in February.

Erik Ten Hag rested Marcus Rashford, Rasmus Hojlund, and Bruno Fernandes, but the forward line of Alejandro Garnacho, Anthony Martial, and Antony couldn’t get the job done as Newcastle held the game by the scruff of the neck.

Newcastle made a host of changes, but the selected lads stood to be counted. Miguel Almiron scored the opener before the half-hour mark, and Lewis Hall added the second eight minutes later. Casemiro looked leggy in the game, and together with Diogo Dalot, he was removed at halftime.

Aaron Wan Bissaka returned after his injury layoff, but he couldn’t prevent Joe Willock’s inevitable third. Ten Hag sent on Rashford, Hojlund, and Fernandes, but Newcastle managed the game better as they heaped yet another misery on Manchester United.

Chelsea advanced to the quarterfinals with a clinical 2-0 win over Championship side Blackburn Rovers. Benoit Badiashile scored the opener in the first half, and Raheem Sterling bent one in early in the second half to make the points safe.

Liverpool beat Bournemouth 2-1 at the Vitality Stadium. Justin Kluivert canceled out Cody Gakpo’s opener, but Darwin Nunez scored the winner in the 70th minute to send Liverpool through to the quarterfinals of the tournament.
