If you ever thought Lille’s championship triumph of last season was a flash in the pan then you might have to think again, enduring everything PSG threw at them to land their first silverware of the season means so much, especially for the title race.
Lille won the Ligue 1 title last season, ending the monopoly of the Paris based PSG and announcing themselves as the next big thing in the league.
Despite being cherry picked by topsides, or at least in expectation of being cherry-picked, they seem ready for the challenge ahead.
Portugal midfielder Xeka scored the only goal in the French Super Cup between the league champions and the Coupe De France winners PSG, the goal came just before the halftime whistle went off and it was enough to hand Lille the cup on offer.
The win gives Lille coach Jocelyn Gourvennec a trophy in his first game since replacing Christophe Galtier. Lille produced one of the biggest upsets to win the French title but left to join Nice, with Gourvennec taking over and leading them to the Trophee des Champions.
Just before halftime, Xeka decided a tense match in Tel Aviv with a beautiful effort from the edge of the penalty area that beat goalkeeper Keylor Navas and into the top corner.
Lille beat and drew with PSG last season without allowing a goal, and despite France backup goalkeeper Mike Maignan being sold to AC Milan, they kept another clean sheet this season.
The French League will kick off on Saturday. On Saturday, PSG travels to Troyes, while Lille travels to Metz on Sunday.
