Ruben Amorim, the manager of Manchester United, has insisted that his decision to remove England forward Marcus Rashford from the team that lost at Tottenham on Thursday night was correct.

Amorim dropped Rashford for the second consecutive game, having dropped him and Alejandro Garnacho for the trip to the Etihad; the decision against the champions proved to be a masterstroke as Amad Diallo stepped up and earned the rights to become the new king of Manchester.

It didn't quite work out in the second game as Tottenham raced to a three-goal lead, while the Red Devils fought back to a respectable 4-3 result. The loss narrows United's chances of silverware this season as they crashed out of the Carabao Cup, which they won two seasons ago.

Given Rashford's indications of a potential departure, the manager has reaffirmed his position on the player, implying that he may persist in his exile if he shows no repentance. Is this the end of Rashford's nine-year career at Old Trafford?

"I feel that I do the right thing for the team, so it's never a mistake," the United head coach said. "We have to make a selection. I believe it wasn't a mistake, as I always strive to do the best for the team from my perspective.

"We control the possession, I think," Amorim said. "We weren't the best team throughout the entire game, but for the majority of it, I believe we were." I believe we experienced a disconnect for eight minutes, which proved to be extremely difficult to recover from. The boys did a great job recovering.

"We still had time to win the game, but the fourth goal was really hard for us. In the end it was not enough, and we're out of the cup."

"He is disappointed, as he was outstanding for us," Postecoglou said. "Even before then, in the first half, I thought he was really good with his feet; he found some great solutions.

"The first incident likely had a slight impact on his confidence, leading to a slight loss of belief, which was further exacerbated by the second incident." But he is a big boy, and he is another one who has stood up for us big time in this period. I can't speak highly enough of this group of players."
