The Liverpool vs Tottenham game at Anfield lived up to the classic that it was expected to be, as the showpiece delivered on its promise from start to finish.

The Kops would have spent the entire week licking their wounds but for a late Diogo Jota strike that handed them the maximum points after Brazilian forward Richarlison had come off the bench to pierce the hearts of the red armies.

Jota started from the bench, considering his late fitness test.

Luis Diaz made his first start for Liverpool in 253 days following his long-term injury.

And a midfield trio of Harvey Elliot, Curtis Jones, and Fabinho took to the pitch together for the first time ever.

Spurs handed a starting role to Dejan Kulusevski ahead of Richarlison, and the rest was as it was after the stalemate at home to Manchester United.

It was a nightmarish start for Spurs as Liverpool raced into a 3-0 lead within the first quarter of the game.

Like they did at Newcastle and against United, Tottenham started poorly, and Curtis Jones netted in just three minutes.

Luis Diaz scored on his first start since being injured two minutes later, and Mohammed Salah converted from the spot after Cody Gakpo was hacked down in the Tottenham area.

Tottenham fought back

Virgil van Dijk cleared off the line but was the subject of ridicule moments later.

Ivan Perisic turned the Dutchman inside out before squaring for Harry Kane, who fired one home to start an unlikely comeback with six minutes left on the clock in the first half.

Heung Min Son raced through after a fine Cristian Romero pass in the 77th minute to set up a grand finish after slotting the ball past Alison to make it 3-2.

Liverpool survived a host of Tottenham attacks as Son and Romero hit the woodwork three times between them.

It happened as many feared late on: Richarlison came off the bench and bundled home a set-piece by Son two minutes into added time.

But Spurs slept off at the back.

Jota benefitted from a wayward pass by substitute Lucas Moura to fire past Fraiser Forster and win it for the hosts at the death.

Liverpool moved above Tottenham on the table with the win and will be ready to stage a sensational top-four push, which is as unlike as it comes, but stranger things have happened in football.

Overall, the Liverpool vs Tottenham battle was a fantastic game of football between two of the Premier League's top sides.

And Liverpool fans will be hoping for more of the same as the season reaches its climax.
