Danny Ings scored a spectacular bicycle kick on his Aston Villa first home game as they defeated Newcastle to avenge their opening-day defeat at Watford.
Ings' unstoppable acrobatic volley into the corner of Freddie Woodman's net was the only moment of genuine quality in a scrappy first half. He connected perfectly with Tyrone Mings' flick-on.
Villa started the second half brighter and increased their lead via Anwar El Ghazi's penalty, which referee David Coote awarded after being directed by VAR to go to his pitchside monitor to check a Jamaal Lascelles handball from Mings' header.
Newcastle were awarded a penalty by Coote following Emi Martinez's late tackle on Callum Wilson, but VAR ruled that the 29-year-old forward was offside in the build-up, and the decision was reversed.
Wilson spurned a glorious chance to put the toons ahead after just five minutes, curling wide as Villa's players appealed for a foul on Mings.
Newcastle's defeat was their 13th in the league in 2021 - only Southampton and Burnley have suffered more defeats in the current top flight.
