World Cup 2026 Preview: Senegal And Algeria Get Their Shot
Today is the day Africa gets two proper measuring sticks.
Senegal get France. Algeria get Argentina.
No soft landing, no warm-up, no friendly little “welcome to the tournament” handshake.
Just Mbappe, Messi, pressure, and two African teams who can change the mood of the whole World Cup if they are brave enough to punch back.
Group I starts with France vs Senegal and Iraq vs Norway.
Group J starts with Argentina vs Algeria and Austria vs Jordan.
Everybody is on zero, which means everybody still has a clean story.
By tonight, some of those stories will already need PR management.
Big teams do not fear underdogs until the underdog scores first and the badge stops doing the defending.
France vs Senegal — Group I — New York/New Jersey, 8pm (UK)
This is the game for Africa today.
France have the stars, the recent World Cup pedigree, and Kylian Mbappe walking into another tournament like it belongs to him.
Senegal have history. And not polite history either. The 2002 opener is still sitting there like an unpaid debt.
France are dangerous because their attack is unfair.
Mbappe, Dembele, Michael Olise and Desire Doue in the same front four is the kind of thing that makes defenders start negotiating with God before kick-off.
Even if Didier Deschamps keeps some weapons on the bench, the drop-off is insulting.
But Senegal are not here to admire French squad depth. Sadio Mane, Nicolas Jackson and Ismaila Sarr give them speed, direct running and enough transition threat to make France defend backwards.
That is where this game lives.
If Senegal can survive the first French wave, they can turn this into a proper contest.
Kalidou Koulibaly and Moussa Niakhate have a nasty job.

Iraq vs Norway — Group I — Boston, 11pm (UK)
This is where Group I becomes simple.
France and Senegal will take the headlines, but Iraq vs Norway could decide who stays alive for the third-place route before the group even gets messy.
Norway have waited since 1998 to return to this stage, and they did not come back quietly.
Erling Haaland is here. Martin Odegaard is here. Alexander Sorloth is here.
That is a lot of footballing violence for one Iraqi back line to manage.
Iraq will lean on Aymen Hussein, Ali Jasim and Zidane Iqbal to give them moments.
They cannot turn this into a long defensive shift with no outlet, because Haaland does not need 10 chances. He needs one defender to blink.

Argentina vs Algeria — Group J — Kansas City, 2am (UK, Wed)
This is the biggest global game of the day.
The defending champions begin, Messi is still here, and Algeria get the kind of fixture that either makes you famous or makes you a cautionary tale.
Argentina know what a bad opener feels like.
Saudi Arabia did that damage in 2022, and Argentina still ended up lifting the trophy, so let us not pretend one group game tells the whole story.
But it does create noise.
And with questions over how sharp Messi is, Algeria will smell the chance to make the champions uncomfortable.
Messi has been declared fit and is set to start, but how sharp he is, and how long Scaloni risks him, is the real question.
Even a rusty Messi is still better than most fully-fit footballers, which is annoying but true. The issue is rhythm.
If Argentina look slow, Algeria will press the first pass, run the channels, and try to turn Kansas City into another opening-game headache.
Riyad Mahrez remains Algeria’s headline act, but this is not a one-man team. Amine Gouiri gives them movement.
Mohammed Amoura gives them pace. Rayan Ait-Nouri gives them progression from deep.
If Algeria only defend, they lose.
If they attack smartly, they can irritate Argentina long enough to make the champions nervous.

That is not a line-up. That is a problem with medals.

Austria vs Jordan — Group J — San Francisco Bay Area, 5am (UK, Wed)
Austria are back at the World Cup after 28 years, and that alone makes this feel bigger than a normal group opener.
Ralf Rangnick has built a team with structure, pressing and enough attitude to make them everyone’s “dark horse” until they actually have to prove it.
Jordan are making their World Cup debut.
They are not loaded with European-club names, but they are organised, direct, and proud in the way debutants can be dangerous.
Mousa Tamari is the obvious threat. If Austria switch off, he is the one who can turn a defensive match into a national celebration.
Austria should have too much.
Marcel Sabitzer, Xaver Schlager, Nicolas Seiwald and Marko Arnautovic give them the kind of experience Jordan will struggle to match.
But Rangnick has already warned against underrating them, and after Asian teams have already caused problems in this tournament, he is right to be paranoid.

Upset Special
Algeria to score against Argentina. I am not calling the full upset, but Algeria have enough direct speed to punish one sloppy moment.
Argentina learned this lesson against Saudi Arabia in 2022. They should remember it before Mahrez starts waving that left foot around.
For Africa, this is a serious day. Senegal get France. Algeria get Argentina.
