Barcelona may win La Liga — but losing Lamine Yamal stings

Lamine Yamal may miss the rest of Barcelona’s season, and that changes the title run-in while raising questions over his World Cup sharpness.

Lamine Yamal may still return in time for the World Cup, but Barcelona losing him now changes the feel of this title run-in straight away.

Barcelona confirmed that Lamine Yamal has a hamstring injury in his left leg, will miss the rest of the club season, and is only expected to be available for the World Cup.

Barca are still nine points clear in La Liga, so the title is still there. But the story is no longer the same.

That is because Lamine Yamal is not just another good young player. Lamine Yamal is the reason Barcelona can look ordinary for half an hour and still feel one touch away from danger.

He scored the winning penalty against Celta Vigo, then immediately went down injured.

That alone sums up his season.

He has been Barca’s top scorer in La Liga with 16 goals, and the player opponents fear most when matches start turning tense.

Remove Lamine Yamal and Barcelona do not suddenly become poor. They just stop feeling inevitable.

That is why people saying “Barca are still nine points clear” are missing the point. Of course they can still win the league. They probably should.

But football is not only about what you win. It is about how it feels while you are winning it.

With Lamine Yamal, Barcelona had electricity. They had the kind of threat that makes a dead game feel alive because one dribble can tilt the whole night.

Without Lamine Yamal, this final stretch risks becoming efficient instead of exciting.

The table may still say control. Your eyes will say something else.

The biggest loss may be El Clasico.

Barcelona still have six league matches left, including Real Madrid on 10 May.

That game was supposed to be another stage for Lamine Yamal, the sort of night where the best young player in Spain reminds everyone that he is already deciding major matches.

Now Barcelona may still walk into that fixture in command of the title race, but without the one attacker who changes the emotional temperature of a stadium.

Clasico will still be huge. It just will not feel as dangerous.

Then there is Spain, and this is where the Lamine Yamal story gets even bigger.

The good news is that Barcelona expect Lamine Yamal to be available for the World Cup, and Spain’s opener is on 15 June against Cape Verde. That gives him some time.

But let’s not pretend “expected to be available” means “he will arrive flying”.

A hamstring injury for an explosive winger this close to a major tournament is still a proper concern.

Spain may well have Lamine Yamal. The real question is what version of Lamine Yamal they get.

That distinction matters. A fit-enough Lamine Yamal is not automatically a fully sharp Lamine Yamal.

Rhythm matters. Match intensity matters. Confidence in your body matters.

Spain can still go into the World Cup believing Lamine Yamal will be one of their difference-makers, and rightly so.

But if you think missing the end of a title race, missing El Clasico, and then walking straight into the biggest tournament in football comes with no cost, you are choosing comfort over reality.

Some will say Barcelona should never be this dependent on an 18-year-old. Fine. But that is what happens when a player is this special.

Teams bend towards talent. They always have. Barcelona did it with Messi. Madrid did it with Cristiano.

Once a player starts deciding matches and warping defensive plans, the whole season begins to orbit him.

That is not a flaw in the system. That is what stars do.

And Lamine Yamal is already a star. That is why this injury lands like more than an injury update.

So yes, Barcelona can still win La Liga. Spain can still go to the World Cup dreaming big.

Both things can be true.

But Lamine Yamal missing the rest of the season still changes the ending, and it puts a small cloud over the start of Spain’s summer as well.

The medals may still come. The magic has taken a hit.
