Liverpool’s title charge faced the first real test in midweek in the final Merseyside derby to be played at Goodison Park, and it left scars despite the fact that they gained a precious point.

Was it disrespectful for the cops to have counted their three points before they filed out against Everton? Did they overrate themselves? While their lead grew from six to seven points, the two points dropped have the tendency to hurt their title charge.

Wolves will see this one as a free hit; they have posted some interesting results recently, but do they have what it takes to stop the wounded Liverpool? What do they have to lose on a day like this? They can show up to be spoilers, but where is their head ahead of this fixture?

Wolves have won their last two games across two competitions, beating Aston Villa 2-0 in the league before the FA Cup break and then dumping Blackburn Rovers out of the cup to book a date in the fifth round. They need that momentum to push things against the Kops.

Liverpool watched Arsenal beat Leicester late on Saturday, a result that has gotten the Gunners closer to the Kops on the log, albeit with Arsenal playing one more game, and Liverpool has the chance to restore the seven-point lead when Wolves visit Anfield on Sunday.

Wolves currently sit two points above the drop zone and wouldn’t want to spend the rest of the season with their hearts in their mouths, so a win here could send a statement to West Ham, Spurs, and United, who are currently above the West Midlands side.

Cody Gakpo is a major doubt for the visit of Wolves as he’s carrying a knock, but he will be assessed ahead of kickoff; however, Curtis Jones bagged a red card in the melee that followed the stalemate at Everton and won’t feature in this one.

Liverpool will also miss Arne Slot’s guidance on the bench after the Dutchman was also shown a red card after full time on Thursday alongside his assistant, leaving the Reds needing one of Slot’s other assistants with the coach role on Sunday.

Wolves will be without a host of players; Hwang Hee Chan is a doubt, but he could feature if he passes a late fitness test. Jorgen Strand Larsen is injured, and so is Enso Gonzalez, but Sasa Kalajdzic is back in training and could make the bench.

Wolves must soak up pressure, stay disciplined, and maintain focus for the entirety of the game; they will have it all to do against Mohammed Salah and co.; however, the fact they aren’t under pressure could help them to play with freedom.

Verdict: Liverpool to win.
