“Hello Culers”, the voice came out of a well scripted video but not many expected the shock that followed; after 615 games over a career that spanned fifteen years and having been involved at Barcelona for 25 years, Gerrard Pique has announced his retirement.
He did it his way and you may want to ask questions. Who retires midway through a season when you’re not injured or involved in some legal battle? He doesn’t play lot of games these days which definitely contributed to the decision but Pique has left the entire football world in shock.
“Everyone has been talking about me and it’s time for me to talk about myself” – Pique’s lines in the emotional video will run cold shivers down anyone’s spine; despite having a stint with Manchester United, Pique will be regarded as a Barcelona man through and through.
The return of Xavi Hernandez to the club hasn’t helped for playing time but Pique can understand. He has won everything there is to win as a footballer and he will bow out as one of the best to ever man the gates for any club.
Gerrard Pique has announced his retirement and Tuesday night would be his final game as a Barcelona player. If selected as expected, Saturday game would be his last home game and he will have the opportunity of saying goodbye to the Camp Nou faithfuls.
Watching Barcelona limp out of the champions league must be a low moment for the celebrity defender but he has dropped more hints than necessary for his potential return and maybe someday, he could spot the black suit and bow tie in the director’s box as the president, it is possible.
