Love him or hate him, you can’t take away his prowess and yet again, Cristiano Ronaldo has broken another record as the only footballer on the planet to score in five successive World Cups.

Ronaldo led the line against Ghana in a Qatar World Cup Group H game on Thursday and he proved his worth again albeit off a contentious penalty that was awarded against Southampton’s Salisu for a shoulder charge on the Portuguese captain.

VAR didn’t have a look despite the protests from the Africans but the referee’s decision stood unchallenged. Ronaldo fired past the Ghana goalkeeper and the enviable record will now add to the many records of the five-time Ballon d’Or winner.

Portugal went on to win 3-2 after Andre Ayew drew Ghana level before Bruno Fernandes assisted Joao Felix and Rafael Leao. Osman Bukari scored late on to set up a grand-stand finish but the Portuguese will hang on for a win that sets them apart in the group.

Portugal’s next game is against Uruguay next Wednesday while the African side Ghana will take on South Korea. The other game in the group between Uruguay and South Korea ended goalless, which means Portugal leads the group and Ghana sits at the base.
