There’s something personal between Bayern Munich and Barcelona, the energy the Bavarians expend on the Catalan side is usually different and it’s important to wonder why.
Barcelona will not be progressing to the next round of the UEFA Champions League after losing to Bayern Munich on Wednesday night; the whole Xavi process has failed in that regard and they must now try to find joy in La Liga or risk a meltdown.
But why does Bayern take things personally when Barcelona is the opponent? Could it be the Pep Guardiola factor? Is there an incident that the German side hasn’t forgotten? The molestation is becoming too one-sided and UEFA may have to intervene.
Barcelona got Robert Lewandowski from the Bavarians in the summer and it's the worst-kept secret that Bayern didn't like the development but the angst against the Spanish side didn't start last summer.
The story of Thiago Alcantara is another reference point. The Spaniard was wanted by Barcelona and the Catalan side made frantic efforts before Alcantara joined Bayern. The pint-sized midfielder was quoted to say “all Spanish players don’t have to play for Barcelona or Real Madrid”.
Another hijack was the case of Javi Martinez. Barcelona has lost out on too many occasions to Bayern and we may start an inquest into why Bayern doesn’t joke with another opportunity to embarrass the 2015 Champions League winners.
The 3-0 loss on Wednesday, coupled with Inter Milan’s win over Victoria Plzen means Barcelona will now be demoted to the Europa League for the second straight season. Do we pin this regression on the loss of Lionel Messi too? Or the unforgiving spirit of Bayern Munich?
