Manchester City are champions, hence the valid point for their players being favored for top awards, but in the course of the season, a few individuals stood out in their respective teams and you can argue that they singlehandedly dragged their teams through the challenges of 2020/21 season.
Kevin De Bruyne was announced as the Players’ Player of the
year in the premier league, following the footsteps of Thierry Henry and
Cristiano Ronaldo as the only players to have bagged the award that speaks of
respect among fellow players in back to back seasons.
Chelsea’s Fran Kirby won it for the female set up but the credibility of choice in the male set-up calls for a debate.
Make no mistake,
Kevin De Bruyne is an outstanding footballer, an intelligent professional and
deserves respect, but in the just concluded season, is he the obvious choice?
Not many had problems with the choice of Ruben Dias as the Premier League Player of the Year.
But with the contributions of Harry Kane and
Heung Min Son at Spurs, Mohammed Salah at Liverpool and Bruno Fernandes at
Manchester United, you wonder what metrics the players employed.
Talking numbers, Harry Kane is the league top scorer and the
assist winner for the season, that in a way deserves some recognition on its
own, while the league board overlooked him in their selection, the players who
he played against shouldn’t.
Bruno Fernandes for a midfielder has way more goal
involvement in the season than De Bruyne and Mo Salah helped Liverpool to a
fourth spot despite how far off they were ahead of the run-in.
The Premier League has a way of confounding observers, bookmakers will question this particular one, but not taking anything away from the sensational De Bruyne who missed out on player of the season for another season.

I hope nobody takes the PFA POTY seriously anymore, De Bruyne wasn’t even top 3 this season in the league 😂— Mod (@CFCMod_) June 6, 2021
I think it's clear to see that De Bruyne gets awards based on his name. Hasn't even been top 5 best Premier League players this season. So undeserved.— Trey⭐⭐⭐ (@UTDTrey) June 6, 2021
De Bruyne voted PFA Player of the year just proves a lot of footballers only have brains in their feet lol! Ridiculous. Absolutely ridiculous. Gundogan, Dias, Kane, Bruno all more deserving— Mark Goldbridge (@markgoldbridge) June 6, 2021
Özil didn’t get into the TOTY, where as De Bruyne got POTY.— Zü 🦋 (@zuhayrfc) June 6, 2021
