It was clear from the team selection, there was an obvious game plan, Jurgen Klopp saw it, he could tell that Chelsea wanted to hit him on the break, yet he did nothing about it.

There were lots of reservations about Thomas Tuchel at Chelsea when he took over the reigns from the fired Frank Lampard but the German has proven everyone who had doubts about him wrong.

Beating Spurs and Liverpool and earning a deserved point against United is immense.

Liverpool hosted Chelsea on Thursday night and felt they had a chance with the return of Fabinho at the back but it was Chelsea who looked like the team with intent and ambition from the blast of the whistle.

Mason Mount’s first-half goal helped the Blues to victory over a clueless in the  at Anfield on Thursday night as the Tuchel’s side moved back into the top four in the standings, usurping West Ham who have a game in hand.

Chelsea, who came into the match unbeaten in nine games since Thomas Tuchel took over, looked to have taken the lead when Timo Werner latched onto a ball over the top of the Liverpool defense and beat an onrushing Alison.

However, the goal was ruled out for a very narrow offside call after video review.

Mount fired the visitors into the lead before half-time with an exquisite strike from the top of the penalty area after N’golo Kante picked him out with a long ball on a counter-attack.

"It's very tight around the top four and these big games we need to win," Mount said. "Tonight maybe we could have had a couple more goals. We had to be brave and win the ball back high and that's where the goal came from."

Liverpool, who substituted a disgruntled Mohammed Salah in the second half, struggled to carve out clear chances as they slipped to a club-record fifth successive home league defeat, having gone unbeaten in their previous 68 games at Anfield.

Alisson made a fine, close-range save to keep Werner from doubling Chelsea's lead in the 76th minute as Liverpool looked to find a way back into the game.

Chelsea dug in and saw out the result despite the ramped-up pressure from the hosts to move back into the top four on 47 points, while Liverpool remain stuck in seventh place with 43 points from 27 matches.
