Valencia defender Shkodran Mustafi opened a bit of a debate yesterday at a press conference.

A practicing Muslim, Mustafi wanted to remove an Estrella beer bottle that was on the desk in front of him as his religion prohibits him from drinking or promoting alcohol. Valencia don’t share this policy.

The Spanish giants were obliged to have that beer bottle there due to a promotional arrangement with Estrella, which is why the club’s press officer overruled Mustafi’s objections and put the beer in front of him.

Many observers say that it’s not right for any footballer to be forced to break his religion’s rules, but others will say that Valencia pay him enough money to participate in promotional activities.
