Enzo Maresca to Man City solves Pep’s exit on paper, but Chelsea’s statement turned a smart hire into a proper football soap opera.

Enzo Maresca to Manchester City is official, and somehow Chelsea still managed to make the announcement feel like a courtroom scene.

The Italian has been announced as Pep Guardiola’s successor on a three-year deal, with City paying Chelsea around £17 million in compensation. 

Maresca also made a separate payment to his former club after resigning from Stamford Bridge midway through last season.

So yes, City got their man.

But Chelsea got their invoice paid.

For City, the logic is obvious. 

Maresca knows the building, knows the standards, and knows the Guardiola playbook without needing a welcome pack and three months of “what does inverted full-back mean?” meetings. 

He worked with Pep during the treble season, handled City’s Elite Development Squad, and built his own reputation by taking Leicester back to the Premier League before landing the Chelsea job.

This is not City hiring a stranger. 

This is City bringing back a former staff member and asking him to keep the machine breathing.

The Etihad succession plan looks less like a rebuild and more like a family reunion with legal fees.

My verdict? Good appointment. Messy route.

Replacing Guardiola is football’s version of taking the stage after the headline act has already performed all the hits. 

You are not winning the room with “I was his assistant once”. 

You need results, control, trophies, and you need them fast because City fans have spent years treating 90 points like a basic customer service requirement.

But this makes more sense than most of the big-name alternatives. 

City are not chasing vibes. They are chasing continuity. 

After seeing Manchester United turn the post-Ferguson years into a long-running documentary on bad planning, City have clearly decided they are not doing that nonsense.

For Chelsea, the statement was spicy without saying too much.

They basically told the world Maresca’s head had already left before his body followed. 

That is not a breakup message. That is a legal note with blue ink and hurt feelings.

Now the fun begins. 

Maresca must prove he is not Pep’s photocopy with a different accent, Chelsea must prove Xabi Alonso is the adult in the room, and every City rival must accept the worst possibility.

Pep may be gone, but City have not handed the keys to a tourist.
