Chelsea Football Club has confirmed the appointment of former Real Madrid manager Xabi Alonso as the new permanent manager at the club.

Xabi Alonso signed a four-year deal at Chelsea, with the club announcing that their new man is a manager, not a coach. Chelsea sacked Liam Rosenior in April following a run of successive losses. Alonso will take charge of the club at the end of the current season.

"Chelsea is one of the biggest clubs in world football, and it fills me with immense pride to become manager of this great club," Alonso said in a statement.

"From my conversations with the ownership group and sporting leadership, it is clear we share the same ambition. We want to build a team capable of competing consistently at the highest level and fighting for trophies."
