Arsenal's aspirations of winning a record quadruple this season were decisively dashed when Manchester City defeated them 2-0 in the Carabao Cup final at Wembley on Sunday.

Played under a tense, high-stakes atmosphere, the final began with Arsenal looking to assert themselves early, dominating possession and pressing high up the pitch. Their intent was clear: control the tempo and unsettle City’s rhythm. However, Manchester City weathered the early pressure with trademark composure, gradually growing into the contest through controlled spells of possession.

Both managers went for their backup keepers in goal, with James Trafford in the City goal and Kepa Arrizabalaga in goal for the Gunners. It was the latter who eventually underlined the result with a blunder that handed City the lead.

Arsenal dominated the opening exchange. Trafford saved twice from Kai Havertz and Bukayo Saka, but you'd argue that the German forward should have scored. The Cityzens looked rattled, but the Gunners failed to take advantage.

The loss of Eberechi Eze before kickoff meant Havertz started in the hole behind Viktor Gyorkeres. Manchester City trusted Rodri as a single pivot with Bernardo Silva roaming around him. The first half was cagey to say the least but, it was the Gunners who had the upper hand.

Manchester City took the lead after settling into the second half. Kepa failed to keep an aerial ball in his grasps, and Matt O'Riley beat Martin Zubimendi to the second ball as he headed into an open goal. The goal took the game away from the Gunners.

The decisive moment arrived in the latter stages of the match when O'Riley struck again. Another swift attacking move saw City double their advantage via a fine headed goal, finishing off a flowing team sequence that effectively sealed the result. At 2–0, the game slipped beyond Arsenal’s reach.

Arsenal responded with urgency, pushing forward in search of an equalizer. Their best chance of the half came from a well-worked move down the right, but the final effort was denied by the underside of the woodwork, preserving City’s lead heading into the closing stages.

Despite late attempts to mount a comeback, Arsenal found City’s defense resolute and well-organized. Crosses were cleared, shots were blocked, and time gradually ran out on their ambitions for both the match and their broader seasonal objective.

The final whistle confirmed not just City’s victory but also the end of Arsenal’s pursuit of an unprecedented quadruple. For City, it marked another statement of their enduring quality and ability to deliver in big moments. For Arsenal, it was a night of frustration; one where promise and ambition ultimately gave way to a clinical and controlled performance from their opponents.

Is this the end of Arsenal's strong run? Will the Gunners cave in, self-implode or rise from the ashes of the Wembley tragedy? The loss will hover around for a while as the teams head into the international break. How will Arsenal handle this loss?
