The Premier League returns with aplomb on Friday with Manchester United taking on Fulham. It’s not about the fixture; it’s more about the return of our joy and pure delirium. Good people of the world, it’s show time again; the Premier League is back!
As always, we stick out our necks to make bold predictions ahead of the new season, especially as it affects the top tier of English football. Across domestic and European competitions, who are those teams that will make us proud? Who are the ones who will fall short?
We have employed data, eye tests, gut feelings, and antecedents to arrive at some pretty bold predictions—maybe a little ambitious, maybe a little controversial—but here we go with our 2024–2025 bold predictions ahead of the big kickoff on Friday.
Kobbie Mainoo is named Young Player of the Year.
Last season was about Cole Palmer, he tore the league apart in an unusual way, leading a beleaguered Chelsea side and, carrying men way above his age on his frail-looking shoulders, who will succeed him as the young player of the year?
Kobbie Mainoo was sensational for Manchester United last season; he stepped in when trusted names let the team down, and he starred so greatly that he soon became an integral part of Gareth Southgate’s 3Lions set-up. What lies ahead of the young lad is even greater.
Amad Traore and Alejandro Garnacho are other names to consider from Manchester United. Harvey Elliot impressed under Jurgen Klopp, and he will be immense for Arne Slot as well. Life at Chelsea is a little unsettling with the number of players they have, so we’ll stick to Mainoo.
Player of the Year: Bukayo Saka
By his standards, last season wasn’t Bukayo Saka’s best, but he still topped goals and assist charts for the club and measured well in the league. If Arsenal will push Manchester City all the way, there’s only one man to drive the ship: star boy Bukayo Saka.
Golden Boot winner: Erling Haaland
Erling Haaland will win the Golden Boot again, without a shadow of a doubt. Manchester City will score a lot of goals; they have creators who will not back down; the Norwegians will reach new heights.
Crystal Palace is the surprise package of the season.
It was amazing to see Olivier Glasner at Crystal Palace in the second half of last season, picking them up to around their drop zone; they finished high and can pick things up. Despite the departure of Michael Olise and the desire of Newcastle and Fulham for Marc Guehi and Anderson, we continue to support Olivier Glasner to lead the Eagles to a top-ten finish.
Flop of the season: West Ham United
This might be bold; the Hammers are buying everything in sight, like Chelsea, and they still have Jarrod Bowen, Mohammed Kudus, and a few others who helped last season, but can Julien Lopetegui shine with too many tools?
Premier League champions: Arsenal
After coming in second twice, you’d expect Arsenal to aim for the next spot, which is first. Pep Guardiola, a serial winner, will be their opponent; the Gunners haven't exactly impressed in the transfer window, but with Thomas Partey seemingly fit, the midfield might be in order.
With a backup for Bukayo Saka and a midfielder to provide insurance, Arsenal could be poised to compete with the league's top teams. Despite their lack of goals last season, Arsenal is expected to score a high number of goals and their defense is expected to frustrate attackers.
FA Cup and League Cup winners: Manchester City
Manchester City will aim for cup competitions if the league doesn’t work well for them. The likes of Newcastle, Chelsea, and Tottenham will give good accounts on domestic fronts, but City will be too powerful and too angry for them.
Top four finishers: Manchester City, Liverpool, and Manchester United
Manchester City is certain to finish in the top four; Liverpool’s stability—having been able to keep a core of their players—will likely make the top four; and Manchester United will wrap up the list.
Relegation picks: Nottingham Forest, Everton, and Southampton
Regrettably, this season marks Nottingham Forest's departure from the Premier League. Their financial situation could get them docked again, and Everton is another team to face the drop. Southampton will complete the trio of teams facing relegation.
