Stranger things have happened, but Luton Town has won back-to-back games in the Premier League for the first time since their return to the top flight.

The Hatters lost their inspirational captain, Tom Lockyer, to a nasty incident that was later diagnosed as heart failure in the now-rescheduled game against AFC Bournemouth, and they have stuck together to fight for their man.

Chelsea also needs to win back-to-back games in the league on a consistent basis to revive their form and prove that they’re not a wasted force. They do look clueless at the moment; they need to find their feet and show their character right on the pitch.

The Blues beat Crystal Palace last time out, but they needed some help late on from the VAR to earn a penalty that was converted by youngster Noni Madueke. The substitute was hacked down by Ebere Eze with just a minute left on the clock, and, after a VAR review, he picked himself up and fired past the keeper.

This game is one that means more to both sides for similar reasons. Rob Edwards has the backing of the Luton hierarchy, and they’re not looking to change him. He is doing a good job; however, he’ll need to go into the January transfer window with some funds to improve his squad.

Chelsea has the funds, but they also must be careful. They can’t keep stacking up players with no plans whatsoever; players are also coming back from injury over the next few weeks. Mauricio Pochettino might want to limit the headache to where it currently hurts and not try to add more.

Nicolas Jackson will be off to Ivory Coast for AFCON after this game; he won’t be missed as he has done more damage to Chelsea than expected. He misses chances for fun, and it might just be time to see what a partnership between Christopher Nkunku and Armando Broja would deliver.

Luton will continue what they know how to do. To stifle teams at home, defend deep and take their half chances. They did against Liverpool, Arsenal, and Manchester City; they lost to the last two narrowly and earned a valuable point against Liverpool; they’ll live with that.

Chelsea will welcome back Cole Palmer and Raheem Sterling; both missed the 2-1 against Palace due to suspensions, and they will offer Pochettino more options. It will be Chelsea seeking to break down the Hatters; the Blues must, however, be wary of Adebayo and his well-rehearsed back post headers.

Verdict: Straight win Chelsea
