Everton was an inch away from making it five wins in a row across all competitions in midweek, but Idris Gana Gueye missed his spot kick in their Carabao Cup semifinal game against Fulham.

Tottenham is back on track after an abject run of just a point out of a possible fifteen. Injuries and suspensions ruined their pretty script, but they’re back at it again and can build on last weekend’s good result to further close the gap at the top.

With Arsenal and Liverpool squaring up this weekend, Tottenham can take good advantage of whatever result the top two sides produce to get closer to one or gain two points on both if they settle for an unlikely draw.

Everton has defied odds to show they deserve to be in the Premier League. Docked ten points for financial breaches, and the Toffees took things personally from there. They beat Chelsea cleanly and destroyed Newcastle United, going three games without conceding a goal.

Destiny Udogie and Yves Bissouma are both unavailable for this game due to suspensions. Udogie picked up his fifth yellow card in the 2-0 away win at Nottingham Forest, while the Malian midfielder got his marching orders for a reckless tackle.

James Maddison, Micky Van De Ven, Gio Lo Celso, and Rodrigo Bentancur remain sidelined for the hosts, but Brennan Johnson is fit and available for selection after being ushered out of the pitch by both sides after he copped an ankle problem last weekend.

Abdoulaye Doucoure is injured and will miss this game. He joins long-term absentees Dele Alli and Andre Gomes in the treatment room. Dominic Calvert Lewin is settling in after his injury woes, and Dwight McNeil is having a season to remember.

Sean Dyches has revived Everton; they’re defending with discipline and are keeping top shape when they don’t have the ball. They have been clinical in front of goal; they don’t get many chances, but you don’t see them throwing the ones they get away.

James Tarkowski is proving to be worth every penny, and he is leading from the front. He will have it all to do against the trio of Dejan Kulusevski, a rejuvenated Richarlison, and Heung Min Son in the Spurs attack. It will be an interesting game.

Verdict: Spurs to win
