The German Football Federation (DFB) on Friday announced the appointment of former Bayern Munich manager Julien Nagelsmann as the head coach of their national team.
Nagelsmann steps into the shoes vacated by another former Bayern Munich manager, Hansi Flick, who was laid off after a shameful 4-1 home loss to Japan just nine months before the 2024 Euros that the country will host.
"The target is next summer and the Euros; that is a great challenge for me," Nagelsmann told a news conference. "We take it on with a lot of responsibility. There is a whole nation behind us, and we want to excite them with great football."
"We want to play football with a specific idea. But we also demand attractive football, not just based on results," he added. "A Euro is at home with the whole nation behind you. That's our aim."
Nagelsmann’s appointment is until the end of July 2024. The plan is to evaluate performances based on how the hosts perform at the 2024 Euros in front of home fans. Bayern Munich terminated the appointment of Nagelsmann to enable him to take up the national team job.
Germany has had an underwhelming year, crashing out of the World Cup in the group stage and only winning five of their last seventeen games. Germany, however, beat Frace 2-1 in their last international friendly after Flick’s dismissal.
