Manchester United have stripped Harry Maguire of the club’s captaincy after he fell down the pecking order last season.

The England defender has been under fire for poor performances in United’s colours, and he was relegated to fifth choice last season behind Rafael Varane, Lisandro Martinez, Victor Lindelof, and sometimes, as seen last season, Luke Shaw.

Harry Maguire took to Twitter to release an emotional statement after Erik Ten Hag told him he would no longer be the club captain for the new season.

It is left to be seen if the defender stays on at United or moves on from Old Trafford.

"After discussions with the manager today, he has informed me he is changing captain. He outlined his reasons to me, and whilst I'm personally extremely disappointed, I will continue to give my all every time I wear the shirt," Maguire’s post on Twitter reads.

"So I wanted to say a massive thank you to the Manchester United fans for all their brilliant support whilst I've been wearing the armband.

"Since the day I took on the role, three and a half years ago, it's been a huge privilege to lead Manchester United and one of the proudest moments of my career to date. It's one of the greatest honours in club football. I've done everything I possibly could to help United be successful, on and off the field."

"I will always be grateful to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer for first giving me the responsibility, and I wish whoever now takes it on every success, and they will have my full support."

Manchester United would listen to offers for the man they got for a whopping £80 million from Leicester City, but his wage could prove a problem for suitors.

Harry Maguire made only eight starts last season, and to date, only West Ham have asked about him, but nothing concrete has been made.
