Manchester United has reportedly rejected an offer from West Ham United for former captain Harry Maguire, even though the club has no plans to include the center-back in their new-season plans.

The Hammers tabled a £20m offer for the England defender, but Manchester United want £40m for a player they got for a record £80m. With Maguire’s antecedents and the current situation at Old Trafford, the Red Devils would be expected to lower their demands to see a move away materialize.

Erik Ten Hag prefers Dutch butcher Lisandro Martinez and the experienced Rafael Varane to Maguire, and the latter has been stripped of the United armband, with Bruno Fernandes now named the permanent club captain.

The former Leicester City defender is attracting interest from Newcastle United as well, but the Hammers are confident of agreeing on something with United that would see Maguire wear a West Ham shirt next season.

Beyond agreeing terms with United on a fee, West Ham also has to convince Maguire of his wages, as he’s expected to earn more at United after the club qualified for the Champions League. It is now up to the player to decide if he’s okay on the bench or wants to move on.

United’s priority at the moment is Rasmus Hojlund, who is set to join from Atalanta after a reported fee of £51 million was agreed between both clubs. United will also seek solutions for Fred and Scottish midfielder Scott McTominay.
