Tottenham's failed season could get worse next year

Tottenham's Season Review: Disappointments, Managerial Chaos, and Harry Kane's Future. Club faces critical decisions and rebuilding.

A visibly bittered Jose Mourinho sinks into the couch to talk about the only club that doesn’t have a place in his heart: Tottenham Hotspur, and you can understand why, even as Spurs limped to a better-forgotten season.

Back in August, when the league season kicked off, some brave pundits tipped Tottenham to compete for the title, and you wouldn’t blame them; with a manager like Antonio Conte at the helm, you would expect them to win something, but this is the Tottenham heritage.

Spurs started brightly but soon descended to compete for the top four.

A lot happened before and after the World Cup, which eventually saw the club move on from their Italian manager, but Christian Stellini, his assistant, was handed the job, albeit on a temporary basis, as he was soon shown the exit door.

Conte knew what he was doing, and he got what he wanted.

The club lost a game, and the Italian went to rip everyone apart in the media; from the players to the members of staff and the guys that hired him, he blasted everyone, and there was only one way out, the exit door.

Newcastle took no prisoners; a 6-1 annihilation of Spurs at St. James’s Park saw the back of Stellini, and Ryan Mason was handed the job until the end of the season.

There were talks that former manager Mauricio Pochettino could return, but that’s over now as the Argentine has now signed for Chelsea.

Tottenham finished eighth on the log, behind Brighton and Hove Albion and Aston Villa.

If you consider where Villa was before Unai Emery, you’d understand how badly Spurs fared in the just-concluded season, and it could get worse in the following season if the same mistakes are made.

Daniel Levy is not a friend to most people in the game; beyond Jose Mourinho and Antonio Conte, no one likes to negotiate with the man, and a certain Harry Kane must have a bitter story to tell about the man called Levy.

Kane is in a conundrum, and he has to make a decision now. He made an attempt to leave last season, but Levy stood in his way.

The 31-year-old remains the leading light in the Spurs squad, but he won’t remain the same if he doesn’t leave.

It would be a huge shame for Kane to draw the curtain on his career without winning a trophy of note, and his last hurray is around the corner.

Bayern Munich is believed to be as interested as Manchester United, but does he want to give up the chance to usurp Alan Shearer as the all-time leading top scorer?

Who is the Spurs’ player of the season?

This is a no-brainer; Harry Kane wins it hands down, and even in their shambles, he rises to shine like the morning star regardless of the fog around him.

He became Tottenham’s all-time top goal scorer in the just-concluded season, and he’s eyeing Shearer’s record.

Who is the Spurs’ worst player of the season?

Every other player in the squad has a fine shout for this, from Heung Min Son, who disappointed everyone in defence, to Richarlison, who cost 50 million without scoring more than one.

But all in all, Hugo Lloris wins it with his horrible errors and wrongly timed injuries. He needs to go.

The new season is on the way; Kane must go, and the Spurs must replace him intelligently.

Levy needs a ruthless manager who will be in charge without interference; failure to get it right in the summer could see Spurs go further down.

No European football for next season; the building must start from the back.
