When the gas was burning low for Sir Alex Ferguson while he was at the helm at Old Trafford, he brought in a certain Erik Ten Hag to change the fortunes of the club. Decades later, another Erik seems to have brought great fortunes to the recently beleaguered club.
Manchester United beat Newcastle to land their first trophy since 2017 after beating Eddie Howe’s Newcastle to the Carabao Cup on Sunday at Wembley.
With goals from Casemiro and an unfortunate own goal by Sven Botman, United can only look into the future with optimism.
Newcastle couldn’t count on their first and second choice goalkeepers.
But on the balance of play and how it turned out, Loris Karius wasn’t the reason the Reds won, as the goalkeeper made loads of saves to keep the Magpies in the game.
The opening exchange was keenly contested, and Newcastle gave a great account of themselves before the goals came after the half-hour mark.
First, a fine Luke Shaw corner was headed home by the Brazilian serial winner before Botman diverted Marcus Rashford’s goal past his own keeper.
Erik Ten Hag pulled off a great joke at the post-match conference; the Dutchman brought the Carabao Trophy into the room and, after his interview, headed for the exit without the trophy.
He was reminded of his silverware and he said "this one is already in, I’m going to get the next" before returning to pick it.
"Every cup is big and I have seen the last couple of weeks and months the meaning in England and in Manchester United in our club, our staff, players, how they experience battles in our club," Ten Hag said. "So it is a big win so we are really happy tonight. It has to be an inspiration, and it will help because it will bring even more confidence.
"As long as we don't go over the top with the confidence, keep doing the right things, the right stuff, have that togetherness, keep going and working then we can win even more."
