Southampton is rumored to be lining up former Leeds United manager Jesse Marsche but Nathan Jones’s backroom staff members will prosecute the trip to Stamford Bridge to negotiate the troubled Blues.

Chelsea spent more than many leagues in the winter window, yet couldn’t muster a win since and would relish this golden opportunity against a broken Saints team to register their first win in a while to climb on the premier league table.

Southampton lost from a winning position to Wolves last weekend and to make it worse, Mario Lemina, a former Saints player was sent off in the game for Julian Lopetegui’s side and still managed to usurp Southampton with a late goal.

How the former Leeds man would fare would be a subject of his announcement first and foremost but here, it’s about three points and how they go about it. The squad isn’t strong enough and they just might well be preparing for life in the championship next season.

Joao Felix is the leading light at Stanford Bridge and fans would hope they make his transfer permanent when his loan expires; Myhalo Mudryk is yet to bring back the lightening speed and sleek movement he displayed against Liverpool on his debut but it’s in him to mesmerize and deliver, the time is now!

How will Southampton line up? It’s hard to tell but they can be dangerous; they have absolutely nothing to lose and this sort of game could be a banana peel for a team like Chelsea and they must pay attention to long balls and runs behind the back four.

Reece James and Thiago Silva are rumored to be absent from the squad but whoever is picked to play should be able to deliver against a struggling side like Southampton; Chelsea lost away at Dortmund in the champions league in midweek and will need everything in them to overturn the result next week.

Everything points to a Chelsea win but the Blues cannot afford to be complacent, sitting tenth on the premier league log and almost out of every other cup competition must be a huge challenge and motivation to start climbing.

Verdict: Chelsea to win
