It was worth it while it lasted for the Atlas Lions of Morocco but the final of the 2022 FIFA World Cup will be between the Albiceleste, Argentina, and the defending champions France at the Lusail Stadium in Qatar on Sunday.
It’s been a long journey for both sides but they did it. Not many people expected France to make it to the final, they carried the curse of the defending champions into the tournament but they have made light work of it.
Argentina got many nominations pre-tournament but their opening day defeat to Saudi Arabia got many jumping off their ship. They picked themselves up, with Lionel Messi pulling the strings and running riot, the rest is history.
There’s some room to spare thoughts for Morocco, they gave their all and left it all on the pitch against Les Bleus; two quick goals in different contexts undid them but they can take pride in how well they competed against a side with huge quality.
Theo Hernandez volleyed home after Kyllian Mbappe’s effort was blocked twice inside the opening five minutes of the second semifinal on Wednesday while substitute Kolo Muani scored within seconds of coming on after another neat work from Mbappe.
France now aims to be the first defending champion to successfully defend the World Cup title in sixty years after beating Croatia 4-1 to win the trophy four years ago in Russia. In their way is Argentina and Lionel Messi, how will that play out?
There’s a third-place match to be played, no one wants to lose no matter how little it means and it only goes to show how huge the World Cup is. Morocco will square up with Croatia on Saturday while France and Argentina will lock horns on Sunday, we’re in for a treat.
