SS Napoli has finally tasted defeat this season after losing 2-0 at Anfield on Tuesday night in their final group-stage game against Liverpool in the champions league.
Napoli had remained invincible all season and had stayed perfect in the Champions League and a game against troubled Liverpool was always going to be a test. Liverpool needed a win to steady their sinking ship and they didn’t disappoint.
The first half ended goalless with both sides going for it. It was cagey for most of the half, end to end and entertaining towards the end but neither side could break the deadlock. Napoli defender Leo Oostigard thought he had given the visitors the lead early in the second half but VAR intervened.
Liverpool dominated the second half and eventually got the breakthrough late on. With just five minutes left on the clock and the game seemingly headed for a stalemate, Mohammed Salah struck off a fine pass from Darwin Nunez.
Provider soon became a scorer as Nunez bundled the ball home deep into added time. The referee initially called for offside but a VAR review cleared the goal and the Uruguayan wheeled off in celebration as Liverpool finally got some respite.
It was a big win for the Kops but it did little to affect the stands as Napoli goes on to finish top of the group and Liverpool in second. Ajax beat Rangers 3-1 in Glasgow to finish third and would drop to the Europa League.
