England may be one of the favorites to advance into the last four of the ongoing FIFA World Cup but their lackluster display against the USA on Friday night means they can’t be trusted.

Coach Gareth Southgate in his usual practice stuck with the team that destroyed Iran but couldn’t tinker his way out of the USA’s resolute defending and could even have been hurt on the break had the Americans taken their chances when they had them.

Christian Pulisic struck the upright and Timothy Weah saw his effort blocked when he looked like he was bound to score. Brendan Aaronson came on later in the game to wear down the 3Lions defense but in the end, Southgate has to retrospect.

Phil Foden could have been introduced in place of Mason Mount even before the introduction of Jack Grealish but the defensive-minded Southgate had to choose a point over going all out. His ability to dig deep and make the right decisions will underline England’s chances at the tournament.

In the other Group B game earlier on Friday, Wales was shocked by Iran and the latter is probably still in dreamland. Wayne Hennessy had been the hero for the Welsh side but he received his marching orders later in the second half for what was deemed a professional foul just outside his own box.

Iran made good use of the one-man advantage but to be honest, they were on top when the numerical value was even. Two goals in extra time saw Iran move up to second on the log and if they can fork out a draw against the USA in their final group game, they will advance but it also depends on the other game.

Speaking of the other game, Wales could advance if they win well against England but that is highly unlikely considering how they have played so far; you can’t deny the team spirit in the Welsh side but they don’t have the quality to challenge further.

The USA can qualify if they beat Iran as a draw would place them behind England and Iran regardless of the result between Wales and England.
