From England, to Germany, Spain and now France, the UEFA Nations League continues to serve shocks ahead of the World Cup and you wonder who your money would be on when the tournament starts in six weeks.
With the 3Lions relegated to league B in the UEFA Nations League, France limped to a defeat in the hands of Denmark on Sunday much to the dismay of many. The defending champions will be one of the favorites to lift the title again but should they be wary of the huge curse that comes with winning the World Cup?
Italy won the World Cup in Germany and crashed out of the group stage in South Africa four years later; Spain won in 2010 and crashed out scandalously in the group stage four years later. Germany were champions in 2014 and didn’t make it past a seemingly cheap group in 2018… Hello Le Bleus???
The current form is already pointing to a possibility of a France embarrassment as they offered nothing meaningful in their 2-0 loss to Denmark on Sunday. Fans of the defending champions must be worried at the fact that the avalanche of talents may eventually be the downfall of the team.
Elsewhere on Sunday, Belgium lost to the Netherlands as the Oranje booked their place in the Nations League finals in June of next year. Virgil Van Dijk scored the winner midway into the second half and that itself might be a warning signal to the golden generation of this Belgium side.
Croatia will join Netherlands in the finals while we wait for either of Portugal and Spain in a winner takes all and then Hungary and Italy to finalize the semifinal pairings. The Hungarians could cap off a sensational run with just a draw at home to the Azurris on Monday night while Portugal and Spain square up on Tuesday.
