Manchester United continues to give Eric Ten Hag a nightmarish start to life at Old Trafford with yet another shambolic display away at Brentford Community Stadium as the Bees stung the Red Devils four times without replies, the Dutchman must wish he took Van Gaal’s advise now.

Ten Hag restored Cristiano Ronaldo to the starting line up and took out Scott McTominay but it didn’t take long before Arsenal academy product Josh Da Silva scored the opener.

A long-range effort was spilled scandalously by David De Gea and United just didn’t recover from that.

Moments later, De Gea’s attempt to play out from the back met the hungry pressing of the Bees and Jenson beat Christian Eriksen to the ball in the United area for one to become two.

The signs were ominous but United couldn’t do anything about it.

Brentford hadn’t beaten United in 84 years; no United manager had lost opening two games since the start of the premier league thirty years ago but all that was about to change with Brentford going hard on United every passing minute of the first half.

It went from bad to worse for the visitors from a set piece.

The height of Lisandro Martinez has been a subject of debate over time and it came home to roost as Ben Mee got the better of the Argentine in a tussle of height and De Gea was throwing the ball out of his own net for the third time in less than half an hour.

And then, it became four

A crazy counter attack fell at the feet of Ivan Toney, the English man swept it to the path of Mbeumo who had only Luke Shaw behind him and De Gea in front of him, the result was inevitable for yet another record; United were 4-0 down in the first half for the first time in PL era.

Ten Hag sent on three players in the second half to halt the rot.

McTominay, Tyrell Malacia and Raphael Varane came on for Fred, Shaw and Martinez in a like-for-like substitution and it steadies the ship for the rest of the second half.

While United didn’t concede in the second half, they offered nothing of note going forward with the hosts looking likelier to score than the Red Devils.

The result means United mops the bottom of the log and already five points off the top of the table.
