Arsenal manager, Mikel Arteta has submitted his 25-man list of players for the ongoing premier league campaign and most notably with the conspicuous omission of Mesut Ozil’s name.
Mesut Ozil, who joined Arsenal in the summer of 2013 has been a subject of division among Arsenal fans and football followers having been left out since the restart after the COVID-19 lockdown.
Premier League rules state that Arsenal must submit their 25-man squad by 2pm on Tuesday and it must include a maximum of 17 non-homegrown players over the age of 21.
Mesut Ozil, Arsenal’s highest earner on £350k will now sit out until at least February without competitive football having been left out of the Europa squad as well.
The decision came following Arsenal’s inability to move on players in the just concluded window, owing to high transfer fees and ridiculous wages, leaving Arteta with nineteen foreign nationals players out of which he can only name seventeen.
Alongside Mesut Ozil, Sokratis will also miss out having been left out of Premier League and Europa league squad too.
Arsenal had hoped to move Ozil on during the summer transfer window and there was interest in the playmaker from clubs in the Middle East, but he has always maintained he would see out his contract with the Gunners, which runs until 2021.
Arsenal also negotiated with Napoli for Sokratis and he was touted to be on his way to Naples but the Italian club’s inability to move on Kalidou Koulibaly stalled the transfer.
Mesut Ozil last played for Arsenal in the win over West Ham before the lock down was imposed and didn’t even make match day squad ever since with Arteta coy on reasons why.
Fans believe without doubt that there’s more to the decision to freeze out the world cup winner than football reasons but Ozil has made it clear that he won’t leave until his contract expires next summer.
