Chelsea sign Edouard Mendy from Rennes for a reported £22m as Frank Lampard look for solutions to his goal keeper problem

Chelsea fans must be excited as Chelsea have announced the signing of goalkeeper Edouard Mendy.

The Senegalese goalie has signed a five-year contract with the Stamford Bridge side for a reported £22m.

Speaking to Chelsea's official website about his new move, Mendy said: ‘I am so excited to be joining Chelsea. It’s a dream for me to be a part of this exciting squad and to work with Frank Lampard and all of his coaching staff. I look forward to meeting my team-mates and can’t wait to get started.’

This is a much-needed signing for Frank Lampard's side as Kepa has been struggling since last season.

The Spanish international was dropped for Willy Caballero at the end of last season after his poor goalkeeping but was restored for the first two League fixtures.

Kepa's error led to Liverpool's second goal in the 2-0 Premier League loss at home to Liverpool on Sunday.

Frank Lampard said it was "a clear mistake" after the match.

Mendy kept nine clean sheets in 24 Ligue 1 games, compared to Kepa's eight clean sheets in 33 Premier League games.

Kepa's save percentage was 53.5%, conceding a goal every 63 minutes. Mendy's save percentage was 76.3% and he conceded a goal every 114 minutes.

Meanwhile, Kepa's passing accuracy was 79.7% compared to Mendy's 70.1%.

Mendy is Frank Lampard's eighth signing of the season and the Senegalese shot-stopper is following the footsteps of former Chelsea legend Petr Cech, who also made the switch from Rennes to Chelsea in 2004.

Petr Cech is now the technical and performance advisor at Chelsea.
