Man City 3-1 Southampton: Kun Aguero scores two goals as defending champions Manchester City cruise into Carabao cup quarter finals

Kun Aguero and Otamendi celebrates a goal during Man City 3-1 win over Southampton in the Carabao cup

Carabao cup Champions Manchester city cruised into the quarter-finals after a 3-1 victory over Southampton.

Southampton were keen on damage control after their embarrassing 0-9 home loss to Leicester.

Ralph Hasenhuttl's side parked the bus for most of the match at the Etihad stadium to prevent another humiliating scoreline.

But they couldn't hold on beyond the 20th minute when Nicolas Otamendi nodded home a Bernardo Silva's cross after a short corner.

Kun Aguero increased the lead before half-time with his 11th strike of the season, scoring from six yards out after a cut-back pass by Kyle Walker.

The Argentine forward made it 3-0 in the 57th minute, as he guided the ball through Alex McCarthy's legs.

Southampton scored a consolation goal in the 75th minute after Jack Stephens headed in from a James Ward-Prowse's corner.

Pep Guardiola's men, who have won the Carabao cup in each of the last two seasons, will know their quarter-finals opponents on Thursday.
