Official: Chelsea sign Matteo Kovacic from Real Madrid on loan
Chelsea announce the signing of Croatia midfielder Matteo Kovacic from Real Madrid on a season-long loan.
The 24-year old struggled to play regularly for Real Madrid after signing for the Bernabeu giants from Inter Milan in 2015.
With an abundance of midfield talent at Madrid, Kovacic was more of a bench player which affected his chances at the World cup, being been part of the World cup squad Kovacic was a substitute as Croatia finished as runners-up at Russia 2018 World Cup.
His quest for regular playing time left him with no choice than to ask for a move from Real Madrid.
Chelsea who are currently rebuilding their team under Maurizio Sarri would hope he can reach his potential at Stamford Bridge as the Italian coach continues to implement his philosophy at the former Premier League champions.
Upon arriving at Stamford Bridge, Kovacic said: ‘I am really happy and excited to be here at Chelsea. It is an amazing feeling. I will try to do my best for this club. It is a new league for me, the beginning is always tough but I am sure the coach and my new team-mates will help me and I am looking forward to a great season.’
Chelsea director Marina Granovskaia added: ‘We are very happy to welcome Mateo to the Chelsea family. He is a perfect fit for us this season, his style is well suited to how Maurizio wants to play and we are sure he will prove to be a valuable asset for the club.’
Chelsea now have to offload some midfielders before the end of the transfer window today.
Ruben Loftus-cheek, Drinkwater, Piazon, and Bakayoko might be looking for deals away from the London club.
