Uncle of Derlis Gonzalez dies celebrating after Paraguay’s winning penalty v Brazil

Derlis Gonzalez was widely heralded as Paraguay’s man of the match as they saw off Brazil for the second successive Copa America quarter-final, on penalties.

The Basel midfielder scored Paraguay’s equaliser on 72 minutes, to level up Robinho’s opener for Brazil.

This spot-kick effectively took the match to penalties, with very few chances for either side during the match.

And, Gonzalez stepped up to the plate once more, by scoring the final Paraguay penalty to beat Brazil in the shoot-out.

In tragic circumstances however, it appears that Gonzalez’s winning penalty caused his uncle to die of a heart attack.

Gonzalez Tweeted after the game: “Why today uncle? Why? You left me after a heart attack because I gave you so much joy and so much happiness. I can’t believe it.”

Irrazábal Manuel was just 44 and watched the Paraguay-Brazil match with friends. He collapsed during the post-match celebrations.

RIP.

Derlis Gonzalez was told the news by his wife, who is currently in Chile.

Paraguay will face Argentina in the semi-finals of the Copa America on Tuesday night.
