Man City did not win the title on Sunday, but they reminded Arsenal who usually blinks first when this race gets serious.

Cherki’s opener and Haaland’s winner cut the gap to three points, and with City holding a game in hand, the pressure has now moved fully across north London.

Pep Guardiola called the result “hope”, while Mikel Arteta insisted “it’s a new league now” and that Arsenal “will go again”.

This game was not about control. It was about nerve.

City landed first through Cherki, Arsenal hit back through Havertz almost straight away, and from that point the match felt like two title contenders trying to win a fistfight in dress shoes.

Haaland’s duel with Gabriel set the tone.

Both were booked late on, but Gabriel was lucky to still be on the pitch after shoving his head into Haaland.

If the Norwegian had hit the floor, Arsenal would have spent the rest of the night pretending the cameras were biased.

Havertz scored, yes. He also played like a man trying to beat his own allegations.

Arsenal needed ruthlessness and got waste instead.

He missed the sort of chances that decide titles, not just matches. That is the point.

When margins are this small, your biggest attacking moments cannot keep ending with a sigh and a replay.

City were not flawless either, especially with Donnarumma gifting Arsenal their equaliser, but when the game asked for one clean, decisive action, Haaland gave it.

That is why elite strikers cost what they cost.

There was also a familiar feeling to all of it.

Arsenal looked brave, organised and competitive.

Then City found the moment that mattered most and walked away with the bigger smile. We have seen this film before.

Rodri limping off late could still matter in the run-in, but even that did not dull the bigger message: City do not need to dominate you for 90 minutes.

They just need you to miss when it matters.

Guardiola said Rodri has a groin problem and will be assessed.

And now the title race bends towards everyone else.

Burnley suddenly have the attention of the whole league because City can draw level on points with a win in their game in hand, and possibly go top on goal difference depending on the margin.

Arsenal still lead, which matters. But “still top” sounds a lot less comforting when the team behind you has done this dance six times under Guardiola and is starting to hear the music again.

You did not need a betting slip to know this was never ending 0-0.

My verdict?

Arsenal are still alive, but they no longer look like the side dictating the title race. City smell blood.

If Havertz keeps finishing like that and Gabriel keeps losing his head, this will end the way these stories usually end: with Arsenal calling it progress and City calling it another trophy.

Be honest, Gunners fans - do you still think being three points clear means you are in control?
