This without doubt is the Premier League’s biggest ever transfer window, and not the least for Liverpool, who broke their transfer record twice in the just-concluded window.

The reigning champions spent £400m on a number of players and did well on sales to balance the books, but the biggest news of their spending spree will be the arrival of Alexander Isak on deadline day for a fee of £125m from Newcastle after a long summer of turbulent tussle.

Where were they before the summer?

Liverpool won the league against bookmakers’ predictions. It was unprecedented considering the fact that they lost their enigmatic manager Jurgen Klopp and ushered in Arne Slot from the Eredivisie. Not much was expected from the Kops, but the Slot machine rose the highest to land the title.

In winning the title, Liverpool only bought one outfield player who didn’t even impact their season in any way. Federico Chiesa has done more this season in less than 30 minutes cumulatively than he did in the whole of last season after scoring an important goal against Bournemouth on day one.

Trent Alexander-Arnold joined Real Madrid; Liverpool got £10m for their man and knew they would need a new right-back. Andy Robertson showed lots of weaknesses, and Kostas Tsimikas didn’t do a lot to help out. They also had issues with defensive covers; it was a big window ahead.

Liverpool knew they needed to head into the transfer window to do big things, and while they were preparing their deal sheets, disaster struck. Diogo Jota was involved in a nasty accident, which took his life and that of his brother Andre, leaving Liverpool in transfer limbo.

Their summer window dealings.

The Kops went hard early in the window, signing Florian Wirtz for £116m from Bayer Leverkusen and Jeremy Frimpong from the same German side. After their initial struggles with Isak, they bought Hugo Ekitike for £80m from Frankfurt and then added Milos Kerkez from Bournemouth.

Despite reports that Liverpool is still in a good place financially despite all they have spent, the Kops knew they had to sell, so Darwin Nunez joined Saudi side Al Hilal, and Luis Diaz was sold to Bayern Munich, while Jarrel Quansah was shipped to Bayer Leverkusen for £30m.

Alexander Isak eventually joined on deadline day to add firepower to an attack that had already won three straight games, including the last one against the Gunners at Anfield. Harvey Elliot left for Aston Villa, and a few academy lads also moved on.

Where does this leave Liverpool?

They are the favourite for the title again this season. They have bought well, and they have a manager who knows just how to make things work. There are a few skirmishes here and there, especially in the defence, where they seem to need solid cover after missing out on Marc Guehi; January can fix that.
