Everton Football Club has fired first-team coach Sean Dyche, with the information coming just three hours before their FA Cup tie with lower-tier club Peterborough on Thursday.

An official club statement reads: "Everton Football Club can confirm that Sean Dyche has been relieved of his duties as Senior Men's First Team Manager with immediate effect.

"[Coaches] Ian Woan, Steve Stone, Mark Howard, and Billy Mercer have also left the club." We are currently in the process of appointing a new manager and will provide an update soon.

"Under-18s Head Coach Leighton Baines and Club Captain Seamus Coleman will charge with first-team affairs on an interim basis." Given their recent success and their current competitiveness, the news was unexpected.

Inside sources attribute the decision to Dyche's poor form and uninspiring style of play, but they also believe that the arrival of new owners prompted the sacking, as they coveted a new direction for future achievements.

Dyche took over from Frank Lampard in 2023 and guided the club to back-to-back relegation survivals; the club currently sits in 16th on the Premier League log, just one point above the relegation zone but with one game in hand against the runaway leaders.

Former club coach David Moyes has been touted to replace Dyche at Everton. The former West Ham coach served at Everton for 11 years and left for Manchester United in 2013—a move that didn’t quite work well, and he has since worked at Sunderland and in La Liga.

Moyes has been without a club since leaving West Ham at the end of the season and is set to return to the dugout at Goodison Park, a ground Everton will vacate at the end of the season for a new ground in the west of Liverpool.
