Manchester United winging it in the transfer market? From a strange bid for Austrian forward Arnautovic, to the now abandoned Adrian Rabiot

From a strange bid for Austrian international forward Marko Arnautovic, to the now abandoned Adrian Rabiot chase and then to Chelsea’s Hakim Ziyech, Christian Pulisic and Real Madrid’s Casemiro… Is it safe to say Manchester United are just winging it in the transfer market?

Nothing is set in stones in football, things change overnight and it is why teams have multiple back-ups.

But it’s clear as day that the model at Manchester United in the wake of the arrival of their new manager Erik Ten Hag leaves too much to be desired.

Let’s walk backwards a bit.

The window started with United gunning for Ajax winger Anthony and if you evaluate their options since then, they have all revolved around players that Ten Hag once worked with or know personally and you wonder if there’s more to that than just comfort.

Lisandro Martinez joined from Ajax and he hasn’t been a banger considering his vertical challenges that came to haunt the team in their 4-0 embarrassment against Brentford last weekend.

While the Argentine has all the energy and drive to succeed, pairing him against heavy defenders on set pieces would still make the deal a dumb one.

What are the holes Manchester United need to plug?

No way in hell would you think Harry Maguire is a brand fit for a club like Manchester United, Martinez seems like another option to Raphael Varane as a left sided defender but would Ten Hag choose Victor Lindelof over the English man?

Tyrell Malacia should always get the nod ahead of Luke Shaw if English tax won’t come to play again, the Fred-McTominay thing has failed woefully over the years and playing each of them in either half as was done against the Bees didn’t work either, shouldn’t that send the team on a strong chase for a DM?

Frenkie De Jong has been the name on their lips all summer but the player doesn’t want to come, why not look elsewhere?

Brighton’s Caicedo troubled United all afternoon on the opening day and that meant they had to look into his directions, can they actually get him?

Right back is a serious problem, Aaron Wan Bissaka has proven to be a waste of funds and Diogo Dalot isn’t any better, how do they plan to continue like that?

Jadon Sancho has something in him but does he need competition? Marcus Rashford seems to have a career outside football now, what next?

Christian Eriksen joined and has shown signs of quality but for how long will he continue to try in vain in the midst of players that aren’t good enough or just don’t care?

Cristiano Ronaldo doesn’t want to be there, can they usher him out with loud ovations?

Oh, doesn’t this mean they’re throwing the entire team away?

Jose Mourinho once advised a total overhaul, Ralf Rangnick said same and Ten Haag suggested in his last interview that he will need lots of players, do they actually need a new team at Old Trafford?

Casemiro and all other top names linked to the club could join and still look bad, the Glazers must answer questions in the whole of this too and, maybe it’s time for them to step aside and allow people that actually care handle the club.

As it stands, Manchester United are bottom of the log and it doesn’t look bright for the club.
