England reach EURO 2020 final for the first time in their history after slim win over Denmark, the three lions will face Italy in the final on Sunday

After defeating Denmark in the Euro 2020 semi-final on a night of nerve-wracking suspense followed by unbridled elation at Wembley, England's 55-year quest for a major final has finally ended.

Gareth Southgate's team set out on a mission to go one step further than any other England team since their 1966 World Cup final victory over West Germany, and they ultimately accomplished their aim after coming from behind to beat Denmark in extra time.

England battled their way out of trouble in front of 66,000 supporters in a frenetic, thunderous atmosphere this modern Wembley has never seen before to earn a showdown with Italy in the Euro 2020 final at the same stadium on Sunday evening.

After conceding their first goal of the tournament to Mikkel Damsgaard's magnificent free-kick after 30 minutes, England had to fight for victory against a tenacious Denmark with an inspired goalkeeper in Kasper Schmeichel.

Six minutes before the break, England captain Simon Kjaer turned in Bukayo Saka's dangerous cross.

Schmeichel was brilliant as he saved excellently from Harry Maguire and Harry Kane as the game went into extra time and the chance of penalties was looking likely.

The nation's long-awaited moment arrived, with the large screens at Wembley showing 103 minutes and captain Kane standing over the penalty spot after Raheem Sterling was fouled by Joakim Maehle.

It wasn't easy for Kane, who saw a terrible penalty saved by Schmeichel, but the rebound fell at his feet for him to score, in line with England's long and tumultuous history.

Wembley erupted with deafening noise and raucous jubilation as England finally has the chance to clinch a major title on Sunday, after years of disappointment.
