Manchester United and Borussia Dortmund have reached an agreement in principle for the transfer of forward Jadon Sancho.

The payment plan has already been finalised in a contract worth around £73 million, with personal terms previously agreed upon.

Dortmund's initial asking price was in excess of £85 million, and the transaction is also £35 million less than the £108 million valuation from last summer.

Sancho will join the team after England's participation at the Euros, pending the completion of a medical.

Dortmund's contract with the forward expires in the summer of 2023, and the club does not want to risk him entering the final year of his contract.

The Bundesliga heavyweights are actively seeking alternatives, with Donyell Malen and Noni Madueke of PSV Eindhoven being two players they have scouted closely.

Sancho's old club Manchester City has a sell-on clause, and if the deal goes through, they will get a monetary windfall from their cross-city rivals.

The 21-year-old came through Watford's system before joining City in 2015, but after turning down a new deal at the Etihad, he moved to Dortmund in 2017.

Sancho quickly established himself as a crucial player for Borussia Dortmund, scoring 50 goals in 137 games.

There is a case to be made that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's team has more pressing needs in other areas. A centre defender may be preferred by many fans.

It's clear to see why United are so keen on landing him as Sancho has developed into one of the world's most intriguing young players in recent years.

On the opening weekend of the 2021/22 Premier League season, Manchester United will host Leeds United at Old Trafford.

United will play three games in October and November, beginning with a trip to Leicester on October 16, the first meeting with Liverpool at Old Trafford on October 23, and a trip to Tottenham on October 30.

The first Manchester derby of the season takes place on November 6 when champions Manchester City visit Old Trafford, followed by United's trip to Champions League winners Chelsea on November 27 and a match against Arsenal on November 30.
