Not for the first time and not really a shock, but French legend Zinedine Zidane has left Real Madrid after his second coming handed Real Madrid their first season without a trophy in 11 years
Sources claim Zidane had asked the club to give him few days to consider his future but he made up his mind on Wednesday and handed in his resignation, leaving the club for the second time after first walking on a back to back champions league success.
Results didn’t go according to plan in the just concluded season, losing ground so much on eventual champions Atletico Madrid, although the slip up by their city rivals gave them hope even till the last day of the season but Luis Suarez had the final say at Valladolid.
There had been talks in the media in the course of the season that Zidane wanted to leave, he denied it severally, claiming he’s not a coward and he was going to fight till the very end but with a caveat that he knows when to leave.
"You might think I walk away from responsibility or leave when things get complicated, but no, never," Zidane told newsmen on the 15th of May when quizzed about his future.
"What I do is give everything, to the end, and then the moment comes to change... I don't leave because it's easy. There are moments when you have to stay, and others when you have to go."
"How am I going to say to the players that I'm leaving now? We're fighting for the league, and I say that I'm going? Why would I say that? At the end of the season we'll see what happens," he said after Madrid's 1-0 win at Athletic Bilbao on May 16 in their penultimate La Liga fixture.
Sources maintain that club legend Raul Gonzalez and Max Allegri are the front runners for the vacant seat left behind by Zidane
