Various news sources have now confirmed that Schalke 04 left-back Sead Kolašinac will join Arsenal in the summer transfer window when his contract in Gelsenkirchen runs out.

He’s something of an unknown quantity on these shores. But to clue you in a little, Kolašinac is a powerful, left-footed defender that has spent his footballing career working up the ladder at various German clubs.

Born in Karlsruhe, Baden-Württemberg, Kolašinac left his hometown side in 2009 and moved north to a small town in south west Germany, joining the youth ranks at TSG Hoffenheim.

Just twelve months later, Kolašinac moved to VfB Stuttgart, the bitter rivals of Karlsruhe. It was here where his performances for the Stuttgart U19 side attracted interest from Schalke 04. Kolašinac has been a Schalke player since 2011 and has established himself as one of the best young full-backs in the Bundesliga.

The development of full-backs in football has been incredible, and Kolašinac is as modern day as they come. There is just as much emphasis on attacking threat as a defender running the flanks, as there is in their defensive capabilities, but he ticks all the boxes.

Kolašinac has been involved in 8 goals this season in the Bundesliga, with 3 goals and 5 assists to his name in just 21 appearances. The Bosnian also showed his goal scoring prowess with Germany’s national team at U19 and U20 level, although Kolašinac is yet to score a goal for Bosnia-Herzegovina.

Can Kolašinac become a first team regular at Arsenal?

One trait that Arsenal and Arsene Wenger love in their players is adaptability. We’ve seen English winger Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain play in defensive midfield, Spanish striker Lucas Pérez has played in wide areas and Alexis Sánchez has played everywhere across Arsenal’s attacking line.

And although naturally a left-back, Kolašinac could be moved inside to partner Laurent Koscielny, or into midfield as cover for Granit Xhaka.

Kolašinac is a very physical full-back, much stronger than Arsenal’s current choices in defence. This power combined with aggression in challenges could make Kolašinac a perfect fit for the Premier League.
