Tottenham Set to Snatch Initiative From Liverpool in Race for Teenage Championship Starlet

Liverpool and Tottenham are set to battle it out to secure the signature of Fulham’s left-back starlet Ryan Sessegnon, who burst on the Championship scene this season.

According to the Express, Liverpool are fearful that Tottenham will win the race and land the coveted 17-year-old, keeping him in London as they prepare to go on the road for a year before moving into a new and expanded White Hart Lane.

Sessegnon is high on Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp’s wishlist, as the German eyes the young full-back to be the long term replacement for makeshift defender James Milner at Anfield.

The Reds have also been given hope after Sessegnon was reported to have rejected professional terms with the Cottagers, who lost to Reading in Championship playoffs this past Tuesday.

However, despite Liverpool’s long-standing interest, it is believed that Spurs are winning the race for the teenager thanks to their location, with Sessegnon said to favour a transfer which would keep him in London.

The starlet may also have been encouraged by the chance to work with Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino, who has shown over the last three years that he is willing to give youth a chance if he sees Premier League potential.

Spurs could also eye the teenager as the future successor to Danny Rose who has been linked with a summer move to Manchester City, despite going under the knife for a knee injury this week.

Any team interested in the left-back’s service will have to match Fulham’s £12m valuation before any offer is accepted. Sessegnon, who celebrated his 17th birthday on Thursday, played 27 times for Fulham this season scoring seven goals in the process.
