Real Starlet Marco Asensio Receives Spain Call Up for Matches Against Colombia & Macedonia

Real Madrid youngster Marco Asensio has been called up to Spain’s squad ahead of matches against Colombia and Macedonia.

The 21-year-old, who has already played twice for Julen Lopetegui’s side, is one of six Real Madrid players in the squad, alongside Dani Carvajal, Sergio Ramos, Nacho, Isco and Alvaro Morata.

Arsenal full-back Nacho Monreal is also included ahead of Chelsea’s Marcos Alonso, who is yet to make his Spain debut despite an impressive campaign at Stamford Bridge with the Blues. There is also no room for Monreal’s fellow Gunners full-back Hector Bellerin.

Alonso’s Chelsea team-mate Diego Costa is included and will battle it out with Morata and Celta Vigo forward Iago Aspas for a starting berth, while Gerard Deulofeu, on loan at AC Milan from Everton, is selected after impressing in Serie A.

Spain regulars David de Gea, Gerard Pique, Sergio Busquets, Andres Iniesta and David Silva are all present and Asier Illarramendi could make his first ever Spain appearance after featuring heavily for the country’s youth sides.

Wingers Pedro and Vitolo also feature in the squad, with Barcelona utility man Sergi Roberto, Atletico Madrid midfielder Koke and Bayern Munich playmaker Thiago Alcantara providing competition for Busquets, Iniesta and Isco in midfield.

The Colombia match is a friendly and will likely give some of the fringe players a chance to impress before the World Cup qualifier against Macedonia. Spain can afford no slip-ups as they are currently tied with Italy on points in their group but ahead by virtue of a superior goal difference.

The games will take place next month, with Spain playing Colombia on June 7 before facing Macedonia four days later.
